GRADUATION!!! (and other "stuff"!!)

The big day arrives tomorrow -- Morgan graduates from Howard Community College with two associate's degrees, one in Interior Design and the other in Art History.  She has plugged on through some very difficult times and difficult classes (and we won't mention some of the professors' character qualities!!), but is graduating with a 3.9- something GPA.  The "something" part is because the grades for her last two classes haven't been posted yet, but I'm sure she'll do just fine.  We're all excited about this big step in her life.  It may not sound like much to many people, but this is a gal who originally told us in high school that she would NEVER go to college, and saw absolutely no reason to do so. Now to be graduating with such a high GPA, plans to transfer to George Mason University and hopes to get both her bachelor's and master's -- AND hopes to teach at the college level some day -- well, what a huge change for her!!  We couldn't be more proud of her!!

Morgan and I met today with the gal who's going to be helping us plan the wedding.  After my huge upset over the weekend regarding the delay in the bridesmaid dresses, it felt really good to sit down and cover the big list of things that ARE under my control!!  We're making back-up plans for other dresses, just in case, but at least Morgan's dress is here in town, at the dressmaker's shop, being altered........  If HER dress is OK, we'll make everything else work out........ Breathe, relax, focus....... !!!

My parents flew in today from Florida for the graduation.  Their flight was supposed to leave around 12:45.  However, after they boarded, the pilots found something wrong with the navigation system and had to have a part brought in from Orlando.  Why they had to deliver it by DRIVING it to Sarasota (a three hour drive) instead of maybe a helicopter is a mystery to me.  They made everyone get off the plane and wait in the airport for the part to arrive and be installed.  The flight ended up not leaving until nearly 5 pm.  My poor mom and dad!!  They were so exhausted by the time they got into town that they just grabbed some dinner and went straight to the hotel.  We'll get to see them a lot over the next few days, but what a disappointment not to be able to get together tonight.  I hope they get a good night's sleep!!

We're hoping for good weather for the graduation tomorrow.  The ceremony will be held in a very large tent outside of the college.  The weather forecast is for nearly 90 degrees (ouch!!) and the possibility of occasional thunderstorms.  I hope any storms will hold off until AFTER the ceremony!!  I'd rather not be outside with storms and lightning!!

Pictures tomorrow of the graduation!!  Right now, I need to get some SLEEP!!

So proud of her!

My daughter Morgan is such a hard-working student. I wrote before how proud I am of her, making Dean's List every semester at college, holding down a part-time job, and striving to please God in all she does, including her personal life. Well, this semester has probably been her hardest thus far. Her classes included History of Modern Art (she LOVES art history, but HATES modern art, so this was not a fun class!); Oceanography (probably one of her toughest classes thus far); Entrepreneurship & Creativity (required for her major); and The Ancient World: Prehistory to the Middle Ages. She's had much anxiety over these classes, especially Oceanography, as she REALLY had to put a ton of effort into the non-history classes this semester. And I'm proud to say that her effort paid off -- she got straight A's again this semester!!

Good job, Morgan!!

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow????

My first attempt at blogging -- and on the first (and probably only) day we'll have a really good snowfall this winter! We're anxiously awaiting the snow, the sledding, the fun of seeing Cody outside playing in his first substantial snow! We've double-checked the pantries, cupboards and refrigerator, like good Marylanders, because you know that we would absolutely STARVE to death if we had more than four inches of snow in one day!!

Seriously, it amazes me how much snowstorms like this freak people out around here. Lines at the grocery store and gas stations are insanely long; the top news story of the hour is the impending snow storm and the latest tracking on where's it snowing, updated almost minute-by-minute! It's crazy!! What did people do before the creation of doppler radar, satellite tracking and all the other weather-related technology we have? I guess they were always prepared!! Maybe we should learn something from that.....

I have one client who lives 40 miles from me and is now five days overdue. What do you think the odds are of her going into labor tonight or tomorrow AM during the heaviest snowfall?? Hopefully, I'll get a chance to just sit around, enjoy looking out the window at the snow falling, sip on some hot chocolate, read a book, and just relax, taking in the beauty and peaceful feeling that comes from watching the snow fall. Is it too much to ask my clients to wait until Tuesday or Wednesday to go into labor?

And instead of sitting here playing with my new blog site -- as much as I'd like to!! -- I suppose I ought to return to the more urgent needs of getting tax paper work done and getting those blasted FAFSA forms filled out so my daughters in college can have some small hope of getting financial aid! Why the process has to be so complicated is beyond me. The part of my mind that tends to think in "conspiracy theory mode" suspects that the idea is this -- make it hard enough, complicated enough, time-consuming enough, and a lot of the people that would actually qualify for some government or school aid will just quit, thus saving everybody but dear old Mom and Dad (or unlucky student!!) plenty of bucks! But somehow, I managed to plow through this mountain of paperwork last year, and I am DETERMINED to do so again. (How many more years of this until my oldest girls graduate???)
